Dear all,
On Wednesday this week at 4pm, Dr. Jeff Martin (McGill University, Canada) will be talking
about caching behaviour in Canadian jays. Please, see below the title and short abstract
for his talk.
This meeting will be online (below is the teams link).
Title: Food caching decisions in Canada jays
Abstract: For resident birds in the Northern hemisphere, resource scarcity typically
occurs simultaneously with winter conditions. To combat these compounded stressors many
species cache food, the storing of food items for subsequent retrieval and consumption
after some delay, to ensure a reliable supply of resources. Because food caching behaviour
is cognitively demanding, caching has long been a focus of research in animal behaviour
and cognition. Most of this work has focused on what animals know about their caches once
deposited, however, much less is known about what influences caching decisions prior to
caches being deposited. I will present a series of experiments aimed at exploring
different cues Canada jays (Perisoreus canadensis) might use when deciding what to cache,
and where to cache it.
Best,
Gema
