Dear all
Just to add to Eoin’s message, we shall be going out for an early dinner on Thursday 16th March following Professor Matsuzawa’s talk.
Those of us at the weekend SPRG meeting at the Burn have already heard him speak, and he gives a fantastic presentation! We look forward to hearing him present on a different topic.
Please let me know by Wednesday noon if you would like to join us on Thursday so I can make a dinner reservation.

Dear all,
For this week's BERG meeting we have Christoph Völter coming over from St Andrews. Christoph is currently covering Amanda Seed's duties (both as Living Links research coordinator, and in St Andrews) while she is on maternity leave, so it's a great opportunity to get him over here to talk to us!
http://www.eva.mpg.de/psycho/staff/christoph-voelter/index.html?Fsize=0
The title of his talk is: "Explaining away: how great apes learn causal structures by discounting alternatives".
If you would be interested in coming for a drink and/or quick dinner with Christoph after the meeting then please just let me know. He will need to dash off reasonably early to get back to St Andrews so it definitely won't be a late one.
As usual the meeting will begin at 5.30pm in the Psychology Common Room, and drinks and nibbles will be provided.
Hope to see you there!
Christine.

Subject: One-Year Internships at Chester Zoo
Dear Colleagues
Please find attached the advertisement for our One-Year Internships in Animal Husbandry commencing on Monday 11 September 2017 at the North of England Zoological Society (Chester Zoo). Also attached are the advertisement and application form for our One-year Internships in Botany & Horticulture.
These Internships offer students the opportunity to gain both practical experience working alongside trained Zoo keepers/Horticulturists & Botanists within a unique scientific/conservation environment, and also a series of theoretical workshops covering a wide range of zoo management issues.
It is important to note that despite the duration of these Internships, they are entirely voluntary, so students must have organised financial provision prior to undertaking this year.
I would be grateful if you would make the attached application form available to all relevant students.
Many thanks and Best wishes.

Dear all,
I am just writing to remind you that there will be no BERG meeting this week.
Next week (March 1st), BERG's Prof Phyllis Lee will host a discussion around the following question:
"Can we enable a voice for the natural world?"
Also, after next week's meeting some of us will be going for food and drinks to say farewell to Hayley (more details below). Please do come along- all are welcome!
BERG night out on Wednesday 1st March to mark Hayley's leaving.
Hayley Ash has been with us for many years, as a PhD student and now early career fellow, and is moving on to an excellent postdoc position at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. To mark her leaving we plan to go the Meadowpark (https://www.themeadowparkstirling.co.uk/) after Phyllis Lee's BERG talk on 1st March. (For those on a budget please note it will be individual bills.)
Please can you let Hannah (h.m.buchanan-smith(a)stir.ac.uk) know if you wish to join us so she can book a table. All welcome.
All the best,
Eoin
Dear BERGers,

Dear friends and colleagues
I am delighted to announce that Professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa will be giving a presentation at the University of Stirling.
Professor Matsuzawa is famous for his research on chimpanzee cognition, combining a long-term study of chimpanzees in the wild and testing them in captivity (the Ai project).
His findings demonstrate the sophisticated cognitive abilities of chimpanzees that have had important welfare consequences (e.g. adding to the evidence underpinning changes to their use in research and testing).
Please also see http://matsuzawa.kyoto/cv/en/
Date - Thursday 16th March
Time - 4pm
Location - 2A73 in the Cottrell Building, University of Stirling
Title - SAGA: An attempt to promote the welfare of chimpanzees and other nonhuman primates in Japan
SAGA stands for Support for African/Asian Great Apes and their website is here: http://www.saga-jp.org/indexe.html
I attach a poster that I hope you might print out and put up, or please feel free to send this message around to colleagues.
Maps of how to get to Stirling are here:
