Jim has offered to give us a seminar (please see attached title and abstract), which will be held at 5pm on Thursday 20th April in the Psychology Common Room. Apologies for the late timing, but we wanted to avoid a clash with the events of the Final Year Conference which is on the same day (and unfortunately no other day was possible as Jim is only here for a few days, and had prior commitments on the other days). Dear colleagues, dear BERGers, I'm delighted to announce that this week's BERG seminar, Wednesday April 19th, at 4pm, will be a discussion led by Dr Alexandra Horowitz from Barnard College. The title will be "Who is the dog?" We'll be discussing two of her recent papers: Centring individual animals to improve research and citation practices - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/brv.12912 Considering the “Dog” in Dog–Human Interaction - https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fvets.2021.642821/full Both papers are available open access. BERG Seminar - April 12 - Mike Radford

Dear BERGers, I'm delighted to announce that TOMORROW (April 12th) the BERG seminar will be Dr Mike Radford from the University of Aberdeen. The title of his talk is, "Law for Paws (and other animals)." It will be at 4pm in the Psychology Common Room (Cottrell 3A94) but also taking place on Teams for those who cannot attend in person. We'll also be taking Mike out for dinner/drinks afterwards if anyone would like to join -- Please do! The abstract, teams link, and schedule of future talks are below: Law for Paws (and other animals) Domesticated and kept animals have the status of property at common law. While this persists, it is essential that they are protected by legislation. The cornerstone of such animal protection legislation is a cruelty offence - an entirely legal concept - which is defined by reference to causing unnecessary suffering. While the scope of the offence is significantly wider in the UK than many other jurisdictions, it is committed only once an animal has suffered. However, during the past 50 years the notion of welfare - a scientific concept - has developed into a discrete area of research, leading to legislation concerned with an animal's quality of life. More recently, sentience and greater regard to the implications of evolutionary biology are having an impact on public policy and raising important issues about the scope and nature of animal protection legislation. So, too, is increased concern about the environment, including concern for the welfare of wildlife - which raises fundamental issues about what the term 'welfare' means in this context. Dear Bergers, I'm delighted to announce that this week's BERG seminar, Wednesday April 5th, at 4pm online, will be Dr Lucie Rigaill from Université Rennes. The title of her talk is, "Multimodal sexual communication in Afro-Eurasian monkeys." The abstract, teams link, and schedule of future talks are below: Abstract Reproduction is a crucial activity for all animal species. Individuals have to find mating opportunities, defend partners, and mate at the appropriate timing to maximize their reproductive success while dealing with the cost associated with reproduction (e.g., production of gametes, physiological stress).To guide their mating decision, individuals exchange information about their attributes and status through multiple sensory modalities. I have been studying how primates strategically mate using sexual communication and especially ovulatory signals in several species of Afro-Eurasian monkeys (olive baboons, Japanese macaques, cherry-crowned mangabeys, humans). I will present some of my results on the role of female visual (skin coloration, swelling), auditory (vocalisation), and olfactory(vaginal secretion) modalities in ovulatory signalling and mating strategies.
