Healthy Parks and Open Space – the Salutogenic Environment
Catherine Ward Thompson<https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/profile/prof-catharine-ward-thompson>, Professor of Landscape Architecture, Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture<https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/edinburgh-school-architecture-and-landscape-archit…> (ESALA), Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh<https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/>
Wednesday 27th September, 1-2pm, Cottrell LTB3 and streamed on Teams<https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3ameeting_NTliMjJhNmMtODYyZS00…>.
This seminar is open to all staff, students and affiliates of the University of Stirling. The seminar is hosted by Biological and Environmental Sciences (BES).
Who this may appeal to: This will be of particular interest to those working in healthy environments and sustainable societies as well as those with an interest in ecosystem services. It explores ways in which natural or semi-natural environments, in particular, can offer multiple benefits for human health, and the evidence to support this, including the influence of access to natural environments at different stages in the lifecourse, from childhood to old age.
Abstract: There is good evidence that engaging with green and natural spaces on a regular basis can bring multiple health benefits and reduce health inequalities. The difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the value of being able to visit green and natural environments. This presentation will outline some of the research evidence that underlines the value of access to green space and nature, especially for mental wellbeing, and considers its lifelong importance as part of a salutogenic environment in which people can flourish into healthy old age.
Bio: Catharine Ward Thompson is Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of OPENspace<https://www.eca.ed.ac.uk/research/openspace> – the research centre for inclusive access to outdoor environments – at the University of Edinburgh. Her work focuses on inclusive access to outdoor environments and links between landscape and health, especially salutogenic environments. She has led several multidisciplinary research collaborations, including a study of links between green space and mental wellbeing in deprived urban areas. She contributed to WHO’s Urban Green Spaces and Health report<https://apps.who.int/iris/handle/10665/345751> and has advised on the Scottish Government’s Place Standard<https://www.ourplace.scot/tool/place-standard-guide>. Current projects include: GroundsWell<https://www.qub.ac.uk/sites/groundswell/AboutGroundswell/>, where she is part of a UKPRP consortium researching how Urban Green and Blue Space can support wellbeing and reduce disease; and the Advanced Care Research Centre, involving research on ways in which access to the outdoor environment can contribute to healthy ageing.

Dear BERGers
Congratulations to BERG's Prof Hannah Buchanan-Smith for being awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland!! RZSS recognise Hannah as "an integral key figure within the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland for many years, strengthening and promoting the charity’s knowledge and understanding of animal welfare, while building RZSS relationships with the University of Stirling and the Scottish Primate Research Group, as one of its core members."
These relationships with RZSS and SPRG benefit considerably many of us within BERG, so thank you for your hard work, Hannah!
Best wishes,
Pawel on behalf of BERG

About the Role
Feeling the HEAT - Human Emotion Recognition & Affect Transfer in Meerkats
This project uses a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate the mechanisms around human emotion recognition and affect transfer in zoo-housed meerkats. This project will be of interest for those working in psychology, biology, evolutionary theory, social communication and captive animal management fields as the ramifications from this will contribute to questions currently being asked in human-animal interaction research within each of these fields. Additionally, with increasing research into the impacts of human-animal interactions across farm, domestic, laboratory and zoo animal disciplines, understanding the fundamental principles underlying these interactions are now vital to fully appreciate the implications they may have.
This research will help us better understand the mechanisms of human-animal interactions, with implications for our evolutionary understanding of animal minds and for the successful management of zoo animals regarding the context and quality of human-animal interactions they encounter daily.

Hi everyone,
Sophia Daoudi-Simison is running for the communicaitons officer role in ASAB. If you are a member, these are her plans for the role below!
Sharon
As an early career lecturer, I am keen to gain more experience and contribute as a council member of ASAB, and in particular for the above role of communications officer. In terms of my own experience, during my PhD I was in charge of the social media profiles (e.g. Facebook and Twitter) of the Behaviour and Evolution Research Group (University of Stirling), advertising talks for weekly meetings, staff and student achievements, conferences and grant opportunities. Furthermore, when co-organising the Scottish Conference on Animal Behaviour, I designed the event webpage, conference applications (abstract submissions and payment), as well as monitoring email enquiries. More recently as a PostDoc at Newcastle University I actively contributed to the organisation and advertising of the Spring 2022 meeting (and I designed the logo). I believe that my existing skill set and enthusiasm for animal behaviour research make me an ideal candidate.
Wish me luck!
Sophia

Dear BERGers,
Clare and I are recruiting participants for a study on how people process emotions related to climate change and water issues. All are welcome to participate -- it will include an action workshop, a climate cafe discussion of emotions, and a creative writing workshop! We are running the event four times -- info attached! Please distribute this widely!

Dear BERGers,
Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) are holding their annual conference<https://www.ufaw.org.uk/ufaw-events/ufaw-online-animal-welfare-conference-2…> online this year. To make things a bit more social, I'm organising an informal 'hublet' (AKA watch party) in the Psychology Common Room 20 June and 21 June for those registered to attend the conference to tune in together.
The idea is that we join together in real life to watch the talks together and have the sorts of informal discussions that we might at an in-real-life conference. If you want to join in (PGRs and Masters students welcome too!), please first register for the meeting here<https://www.ufaw.org.uk/ufaw-events/ufaw-online-animal-welfare-conference-2…> (UFAW is a charity; conference registration is £30.00 for students/unwaged). Then join us IRL in the common room on 20th June (from 1015) / 21 June (from 0800) to 'watch-party' together for as many of the sessions as you wish.
UFAW's conference has two great Keynote speakers<https://www.ufaw.org.uk/ufaw-events/ufaw-online-animal-welfare-conference-2…> (below) plus a wide variety of research talks and speed talks looking at many aspects of animal welfare and Human-Animal Interaction in species from chickens to cats to fish to Komodo Dragons!
Dr Beth Ventura (University of Lincoln, UK)
Title: Animal welfare: The elephant in the room is us
Professor Lars Chittka (Queen Mary, University of London, UK)
Title: Bee sentience and its welfare implications
Plus a special shout out for Stirling's own Sarah Weir (PhD student) and Lynsey McDevitt (former MSc student) who will have a virtual poster presentation at the meeting too.
Look forward to seeing many of you for the UFAW watch-party (or virtually at the meeting),
Clare
