Hi Hannah, I’m giving a talk in May at the University of Leeds that might be of interest to BERG, and I was wondering whether you could possibly help circulate?
My talk is part of a seminar on public attitudes towards wild carnivores, with special reference to landscape rewilding here in the UK. Using wild foxes as an example, I’ll be talking about whether promoting research on carnivore psychology can be used as a marketing tool for encouraging greater public tolerance of carnivores.
People can join online or in person. See the programme and book here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/good-dog-bad-dog-online-event-tickets-619827…
Many thanks for your help!

Hello all,
Just a reminder that we have Jim Anderson giving a seminar on Thursday (at 5pm in the common room, and Teams link below). We will be going out for a drink after the talk, probably to the MacRobert or Meadowpark (partly so that Jim gets a chance to see how much those places have changed over the past few years!) – all welcome.

Subject: Jim Anderson seminar on Thursday 20th April
Dear all,
I am delighted to announce that we will soon have a visit from our former colleague Jim Anderson (now at Kyoto University in Japan). Jim has offered to give us a seminar (please see attached title and abstract), which will be held at 5pm on Thursday 20th April in the Psychology Common Room. Apologies for the late timing, but we wanted to avoid a clash with the events of the Final Year Conference which is on the same day (and unfortunately no other day was possible as Jim is only here for a few days, and had prior commitments on the other days).
Christine.

Dear BERGers,
I'm delighted to announce that TOMORROW (April 12th) the BERG seminar will be Dr Mike Radford from the University of Aberdeen. The title of his talk is, "Law for Paws (and other animals)." It will be at 4pm in the Psychology Common Room (Cottrell 3A94) but also taking place on Teams for those who cannot attend in person.
We'll also be taking Mike out for dinner/drinks afterwards if anyone would like to join -- Please do!
The abstract, teams link, and schedule of future talks are below:
Law for Paws (and other animals)
Domesticated and kept animals have the status of property at common law. While this persists, it is essential that they are protected by legislation. The cornerstone of such animal protection legislation is a cruelty offence - an entirely legal concept - which is defined by reference to causing unnecessary suffering. While the scope of the offence is significantly wider in the UK than many other jurisdictions, it is committed only once an animal has suffered. However, during the past 50 years the notion of welfare - a scientific concept - has developed into a discrete area of research, leading to legislation concerned with an animal's quality of life. More recently, sentience and greater regard to the implications of evolutionary biology are having an impact on public policy and raising important issues about the scope and nature of animal protection legislation. So, too, is increased concern about the environment, including concern for the welfare of wildlife - which raises fundamental issues about what the term 'welfare' means in this context.

Dear Bergers,
I'm delighted to announce that this week's BERG seminar, Wednesday April 5th, at 4pm online, will be Dr Lucie Rigaill from Université Rennes. The title of her talk is, "Multimodal sexual communication in Afro-Eurasian monkeys." The abstract, teams link, and schedule of future talks are below:
Abstract
Reproduction is a crucial activity for all animal species. Individuals have to find mating opportunities, defend partners, and mate at the appropriate timing to maximize their reproductive success while dealing with the cost associated with reproduction (e.g., production of gametes, physiological stress). To guide their mating decision, individuals exchange information about their attributes and status through multiple sensory modalities. I have been studying how primates strategically mate using sexual communication and especially ovulatory signals in several species of Afro-Eurasian monkeys (olive baboons, Japanese macaques, cherry-crowned mangabeys, humans). I will present some of my results on the role of female visual (skin coloration, swelling), auditory (vocalisation), and olfactory(vaginal secretion) modalities in ovulatory signalling and mating strategies.

Dear Bergers,
I'm delighted to announce that this week, our BERG seminar will be given by Maria Ojala from Örebro University, Sweden, at 4pm online. The title is, "Climate Change Worry Among Young People: Associations with Mental Wellbeing, Climate Change Engagement, and the Role of Coping." Below is the abstract of the talk, the link, and the schedule of upcoming talks.
Abstract
Many young people worry about climate change. Is this worry related to hopelessness and low wellbeing, or is it rather related to climate engagement? Research shows that young people are not victims of whatever climate change related emotions that are aroused in them but actively cope in different ways. The focus in this presentation is on research with young people in the ages from late childhood, through adolescence, up to young adulthood about their worry and how they cope and how these coping strategies and worry relate to engagement and subjective wellbeing. The importance of meaning-focused coping and constructive hope will be emphasized.

Sent: 15 March 2023 16:15
Subject: Postdoctoral Position at University of Zurich
CAUTION: This email originated from outside University of Stirling. Do not follow links or open attachments if you doubt the authenticity of the sender or the content.
________________________________
Three Year Post-Doctoral Position on Psychological Mechanisms of Meat Reduction at University of Zurich
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the areas of personality, motivation, and adult development to work primarily with Christopher J. Hopwood and also with Alexandra M. Freund in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zurich (Switzerland).
https://jobs.uzh.ch/offene-stellen/postdoctoral-researcher-project-psycholo…<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjobs.uzh.…>
Research will focus on psychological mechanisms of meat reduction using a multi-method approach spanning cross-cultural, experimental, behavioral, ambulatory, and self/peer report survey methods. Primary emphasis will be on data from two projects for which data have already been collected on cross-cultural variation on attitudes about animal welfare and processes relevant to animal consumption in close relationships, as well as a longitudinal study with a meat-reduction intervention component for which data collection will begin in Fall, 2023. However, there will also be opportunities to engage in other projects, including those initiated by the post-doc.
The post-doc will be able to strengthen their research portfolio as well as their teaching credentials by teaching a 2-hour weekly seminar per semester and assist in the supervision of masters and bachelors' theses.
The 100% appointment for three years, ideally starting August 1, 2023. The annual salary is based on the Swiss public pay scale (approximately 100,000 Swiss Francs), and standard University benefits are included.
The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in psychology and have extensive research experience in the fields of personality, motivation, and/or adult development, a demonstrated interest in meat reduction, very good methodological and statistical skills, publication experience in peer-reviewed journals, and a willingness and ability to work in a team.
International applications are strongly encouraged. English proficiency is a must; knowledge of German is helpful, but not required.
To apply, submit a cover letter (about 1 page) describing your interest in and potential approach to investigating meat reduction, as well as your general career goals, together with your curriculum vitae, and two of your articles in one pdf file to: hopwood(a)psychologie.uzh.ch<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fpsychologi…>. Letters of recommendation will be requested from competitive candidates. The search will remain open until the position is filled.
Please contact Professor Hopwood if you require more information about the position.
