Dear all,
Just a reminder about tomorrow's BERG meeting. Claire Watson will be presenting her PhD work on, "Social contagion in common marmosets: implications for culture, cognition and welfare". Claire recently submitted her PhD and will be examined in a couple of month's time, so I'm sure she will appreciate plenty of feedback (and she will probably kill me for saying that...!).

Dear all
I have had a good response to SCAB.
I am driving over and have in my car: Hannah T, Annie Jacobs, Lauren Reid and Sarah Vogel.
Kerstin Wolf is also hoping to go....anyone else planning to drive? Andre - do you have transport/space?
I am also including Susan Richmond, Andrew Bagnall and Kimberly Hahn on the registration list I will send in on Friday. If any of you named decide NOT to come, please let me know asap.
Sue Healy, the organiser , is currently in Melbourne! She says the meeting will start around 10am (so we'd leave Stirling campus at 8.30am) and we'd be back by 7pm. The registration fee of £8/student and £13/staff covers a sandwich lunch and tea/coffee.
The programme will not be available until next week but I will circulate to those who registered.
Best, Hannah

Hi all,
Just a quick email to encourage people to sign up for a BERG slot this semester. Before I start pointing the finger at particular people, can I suggest that any of our BERG PhD students who have not presented before (or have not presented in the past year) seriously consider signing up for one of the remaining slots? And remember that you don't necessarily need to have completed a study to give a BERG talk. We often have sessions where people present their proposed research, or some pilot data, both of which provide good opportunities for feedback on research design.
Thanks! Sign up is here: http://www.doodle.com/bxsrvv5tbhm8skvs

Subject: UFAW Animal Welfare Student Scholarship - 28th February 2011 Deadline
Dear Colleague,
The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare is now inviting applications for the 2011 UFAW Animal Welfare Student Scholarships. The aim of this scheme is to enable students to pursue their interests in animal welfare and to provide them with the opportunity to conduct relevant research or other (e.g. educational) projects. Students will usually be undertaking courses in the agricultural, biological, psychological, veterinary or zoological sciences. However, we would also welcome applications from students from other disciplines and who are interested in carrying out a project in animal welfare.
Projects must be relevant to improving the welfare of farm, laboratory, companion, zoo, or free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by human factors, and may be carried out within the UK or overseas. Successful applicants will be awarded up to £1600 to cover subsistence and project expenses.
Application forms and further information are available from the ‘Grants & Awards’ page of the UFAW website: www.ufaw.org.uk<http://www.ufaw.org.uk>, or please email: scioff(a)ufaw.org.uk<mailto:scioff@ufaw.org.uk>.
Please note that the closing date for applications is: 28th February 2011.
With best wishes

We would especially like to encourage postgraduate students and junior researchers to attend.
List of speakers:
Dr Gillian Brown (University of St Andrews)
Dr Christine Caldwell (University of Stirling)
Dr Lisa Debruine (University of Aberdeen)
Prof Simon Kirby (University of Edinburgh)
Dr Anthony Little (University of Stirling)
Prof David Perrett (University of St Andrews)
Dr Luke Rendell (University of St Andrews)
Dr S. Craig Roberts (University of Stirling)
Dr Tamsin Saxton (University of Abertay)
To reserve your place, please email Christine Caldwell (c.a.caldwell(a)stir.ac.uk<mailto:c.a.caldwell@stir.ac.uk>).
Please circulate this announcement to anyone who might be interested in attending. We are relying primarily on word of mouth to publicise the meeting at the moment, so it will help us out immensely if people would let others know about it. Many thanks.

Dear UFAW link,
Please find attached a programme for the upcoming animal welfare student scholarship meeting that this year the University of Glasgow has kindly agreed to host. As previously, this meeting is free to all to attend and refreshments and lunch will be provided. I would be grateful if you could bring it to the attention of your students and colleagues through the different physical and electronic notice boards and other means of communication you use to distribute information to them.
In addition to those who have an interest in animal welfare science, we have found in the past that second year undergraduates who are in the process of considering the subject of their research project have benefited from attending as it has given them a better idea of what is expected of them, possible ideas as to what their project could be on and a funding source that they might access.
If it is of interest to you and/or your students and you or they wish to attend, or come as a group, then I would be grateful if you could contact me so I can send more details and arrange for sufficient catering to be available on the day.
Kind regards,
Steve
