On Wednesday 9th May, Alasdair Gillies and colleagues from the Blair Drummond Safari Park will come to our BERG meeting to discuss the undergraduate dissertation research projects.
Phyllis Lee, Christine Caldwell, Sarah Vick and Jim Anderson have selected projects to supervise on elephants, marmosets, otters, giraffe, chimpanzee and zebras.
We hope one or two of our final year dissertations students might also come so you can ask about their experience of working at the Park.
This session is for information only - by coming there is no commitment. Drinks and nibbles available. Come for as long as you can (i.e. it is informal so leave when you like).
5.30 pm in the Psychology Common Room (3A94, Cottrell Building).
May I remind you that our final BERG seminar for the spring semester is on Wednesday 16th May. Dr Alex Weiss from Edinburgh University will talk about:

Subject: Behavioural Measurement - the 'State of the Art' seminar
Liz Bate from Tracksys has kindly offered to come to give us a seminar and basic training (for free!) on:
Behavioural Measurement - the 'State of the Art'
Dr Elizabeth Bate. Tracksys Ltd.
www.tracksys.co.uk<http://www.tracksys.co.uk/>
She would include:
1). FaceReader<http://www.noldus.com/human-behavior-research/products/facereader> - Automatic Emotion Measurement.
2). Eyetracking (mobile<http://eyetracking-glasses.com/> and screen-based<http://www.smivision.com/en/gaze-and-eye-tracking-systems/products/red-red2…>).
3) The Observer XT<http://www.noldus.com/human-behavior-research/products/2/the-observer-xt> - Analysing user-defined behaviours (HB-S - we have several Observer licences)
4). Physiological Measurement (heart rate, BP, GSR etc).
5). Video tracking.
Liz says: The need to measure and analyse the complexities of human behaviour in ever more sophisticated ways has led to a huge growth in the number of quantitative and qualitative behavioural measurement tools.
Combining powerful multi-function software with bespoke hardware, a wide range of studies can be conducted quickly, simply and extremely accurately using a single product.
The importance of using several measurement approaches in research has also led to such products becoming fully integrated with one another.
The importance of integrating two or more of the above systems into a multi-modal approach to research will be highlighted.
There are three proposed dates - Monday 30th April, Thursday 3rd May and Friday 4th May.
The Seminar would run from 11-12pm with Observer training from 1-2:30pm.
If you are keen to come, please fill in the Doodle poll so I can schedule her visit on a day that suits us all the best.
Please do so instantly – I only takes 30 seconds! I’m going to get back to Liz with our preferred date at noon on Thursday!

This is a great opportunity for us – and our postgraduate students on most of the MScs, and for PhD students. Please sign up. Further details (date and room location) will follow.

Dear BERGers,
While tidying up in my office I found these extracts from students' answers
to the 46AK exam in 2003. Quite amusing!
³There is a number of different ways in which this competition manifests
itself. One of these is scrabble competition.²
³Natural selection favours a short life for males.²
³Only very occasionally will the male participate greatly in the copulation
period.²
³Such strategies may include use of a sperm plug. Sperm here may block the
entrance to the females to ensure no other species can mate with them and
beat their sperm to the women¹s egg.²
³Males are more interested in women who have wide hips, a thin stomach and a
low waist to hip ratio. This fits with the idea that males don¹t want their
child to compete with excess fat during pregnancy.²

For folk on site in Stirling - please read message below from Alan Law about how to support SCAB by buying cakes!
Hi all,
As you know Ros is organising the SCAB conference at Stirling on March 10th, but we are both trying to raise a small amount of money so we can provide everyone with refreshments at the end of the conference day.
To do this we are going bake some cakes and bring them in on Monday 27th at coffee time ( 11am) and sell them for minuscule prices to all you lucky people (I'll be making fresh cup cakes!). We would welcome anyone else who like to contribute a cake to let me know via email and to bring it along on Monday, anything sweet and cake like is most welcome.
Place: 4U1 across from the BES office at 11am
Thanks,
Alan
p.s. hopefully everyone hasn't given up cake for lent!

Today is the last day to register a talk or poster. Let's put on a good show - we really need more posters!
The programme should be out soon and I shall circulate it.
