Dear all,
I really missed the Wednesday meeting yesterday, but I hope you are all well!
I just wanted to share something we have just launched as it might be of interest to some of you, plus it might make a unique last minute Father’s Day gift!
After the amazing feedback we received from the funders of our recent work at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, it was suggested we should take it further and allow people to contribute monthly.
So that is exactly what we are doing with a Patreon account, …
[View More]where each month we will use the subscription to build a new feeder, new enclosure furniture, or do a whole enclosure renovation, for different animals at different locations, in order to progress our mission of assisting keepers to continually improve the lives of animals at zoos and sanctuaries.
It will mean we can prototype devices and conduct builds that may not be suitable for our Team Building events, and we will be creating our very own Team who will share in the highs and lows of developing enrichment!
In exchange our Team Members will get exclusive videos of the process, and of course the results, to provide that genuine feel good factor as they see what they have made possible!
As an extra bonus, our first 15 subscribers will receive an exclusive invite to a private Open Day at Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary (in Ascot) to see first-hand the work they have funded at this private facility.
To find out more or just to see our new design for Kinkajous we used to kick things off, visit: https://www.patreon.com/TeamBuildingwithBITE
Any help spreading the word would be sincerely appreciated and if anyone is interested I also have an idea for a new ‘Institutional’ tier, which might be useful for those teaching students about enrichment and welfare.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Mark

Dear BERGers
As promised, here is a link to Kristine Gandia’s presentation entitled " "Using a worldwide zoo database to assess the effect of circadian synchrony on animal welfare"
It is 15 minutes long, and we hope you will watch it IN ADVANCE of the BERG meeting to discuss during the BERG meeting. Kristine has some additional slides she may share relating circadian rhythms to our current situation with lockdown, and she may even share her future research plans to get feedback before she …
[View More]embarks upon it.
We trust you will not share this presentation beyond BERG without express permission from Kristine Gandia - this is a practice presentation for the virtual EAZA conference, and should you wish a final version then please ask Kristine (k.m.gandia(a)stir.ac.uk). if you are unable to come to BERG, but still wish to offer feedback, you can also email Kristine directly.

Excited to share a summary of Dr Betsy Herrelko's (National Zoo, Washington DC) presentation for BERG next week (May 20th).
Animal perspectives affect everything we do in zoos. Our success as animal care specialists heavily relies on identifying those perspectives and understanding how to best work with each individual’s needs. When we take into consideration behavioral responses to their social environment and added activities, our understanding of the complexity of their world becomes richer. In this BERG, we will talk about a few of the ways in which perception is studied (largely focused on my own work) and how it can impact applied practices.
Please also consider completing this questionnaire for one of our Masters students - it takes just 20 mins to complete:
https://stirlingpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5iKUUuwW5V97dWJ
The aim of the study is to investigate the effects which different photos have on everyday food choices and related personality variables.

Please see the programme for the free Virtual UFAW conference.
You need to register.
Dear Hannah,
Hope all well with you and your students in this unusual time.
Just to update you with our plans for the UFAW conference 'Recent advances in animal welfare science VII', that we had to cancel as a physical event because of the coronavirus pandemic. We are now running this as a free on-line event. Rather than having all the talks given on one day we have decided to run the conference over …
[View More]two – the 30th June and 1st July - as we feel that this will give us the extra time we will need to get each speaker on-line and will allow a little more leeway for questions. Each day will start at 11.00am and finish around 15.30pm (GMT +1hr). Places to watch this on-line conference 'live' are limited - although the talks are being recorded so they can be watched at any time after the event. I'll send you details of how to do so post conference but happy to answer questions.
If you are interested in finding out the list of speakers for this conference and wish to register, click on this link to do so www.ufaw.org.uk/bham20<http://www.ufaw.org.uk/bham20>.

Graham Law designed the wobble tree the feeding pole & the swing pole feeder among many of his other ideas that benefit animals around the world. ❤️🐻🦁🐯🐦🐬
He was and remains an inspiration to us all in the zoo community and beyond, as his ideas can be found in shelters and research facilities.

Lee Houts Memorial Fund
Lee Houts inspired so many animal caretakers with her dedication to providing an excellent quality of life for captive animals everywhere. Lee was famous for her unrelenting support of enrichment efforts from encouraging the staff of a small zoo to participating in intensive working groups tasked with determining enrichment standards for national zoo organizations. In keeping with Lee Houts' devotion to spreading enrichment knowledge and enthusiasm around the world.
The Shape of Enrichment Inc. began accepting donations in her memory. Monies donated to the Lee Houts Memorial Fund are dedicated towards furthering enrichment efforts in developing countries by providing educational opportunities to those in financial need. For example a keeper from a developing country might be funded to attend an enrichment workshop or conference. Board approval is required for these funds to be used.

Hello everyone,
Thank you again so, so much for your interest and participation in today's African Primatological Society's panel.
Just a couple of quick updates:
1) I resent a confirmation email to everyone this morning. This email comes from Zoom itself and contains the details for joining the meeting- a link and a password. Please check your email- you should have received this information directly from Zoom both at the time you registered and again this morning.
2) If you are unable to join us, we plan to record the meeting. If that recording is successful we will send it out to all participants as soon as it is available, usually within a day or two.
3) If you attempt to join us in the Zoom room, and it has reached the 300 participant limit, or if you prefer to watch online, we will be live streaming the panel through the African Primatological Society's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/African.Primatological.Society/
Thank you again so much for your interest, support, and ideas. We look forward to engaging with you today, and providing more events in the future.

Subject: Important information about 4/23 APS panel
Hello,
You're receiving this email because you registered to attend the African Primatological Society's (APS) panel on 4/23 via Zoom. Thank you so much for your support and interest. Upon registration, you should have received an email directly from Zoom with the link and password for attending the event. If you did not receive a confirmation email, please let me know and I will resend it from Zoom.
We are very excited about this event. In less than a week, almost 500 people have registered for the panel. We regret that our virtual conference room is limited to 300 participants. Now that we know there is significant interest and demand for virtual webinars and presentations like this one, we are working on some options to address this in planning future events.
We will open the Zoom connection at 1:30pm (13:30h) GMT, so please come early to increase your chance of being able to attend the event. The panel will begin at 2pm (14:00h) GMT. If you attempt to join the event, but the space is full, we invite you to email your questions to our moderators (Inza, inza.kone(a)gmail.com; Rachel, r.ashegbofe(a)gmail.com) and we will share them with the rapporteurs. We also plan to record the event and share it with all registrants.
Note that there may be some bandwidth and connection issues during the panel. This has been a common experience lately in video conferencing tools due to high demand on networks. Our panelists will be joining us by webcam so you can see them as they speak. We suggest that participants disable their own video, to help conserve bandwidth.
Again, thank you so much for taking time to join us for this very important conversation. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, hearing from you by email if you are unable to join us, or connecting with you at a future event.

Subject: [BERG] Updates, and essential equipment request
Dear BERGers
Things move fast in this world! (And apologies for cross postings)
In this (long-ish) message you will find:
1) Essential equipment collection from Cottrell Building - deadline Thursday 23rd at 10am.
2) Primates series on TV
3) Petition to End the Global Trade in Wildlife
4) Survey on Pet Bereavement (men wanted!)
5) Survey on Interaction with & Attachment to Animals in the Covid-19 pandemic (INTACT).
6) BERG reminder, 22 April, 5pm
1) Essential equipment collection from Cottrell Building - deadline Thursday 23rd at 10am.
It is possible that we can get a collection of utterly essential research items from the Cottrell Building (walking distance from my house).
Please send me an email, with a) your office number, b) the item you request and a brief justification, and c) the location in the office where it will be found.
I hope I shall get access to your office (in which case a video link might be possible so send me your WhatApp number if it is tricky to locate), but it may be University staff that retrieve it.
Please note that this is not to prepare for future projects, but rather to help you continue with your research at home (e.g. a hard drive with key video data that you need to finish a paper).
I will then send the equipment on to you by post.
And no promises, but the coordinated collection approach has been approved, so I am hopeful.
2) Primates series on TV
Primates series is confirmed here in the UK to be airing on BBC One as follows:
EP 1 Secrets of Survival - Sunday 26th April 8.15pm<https://outlook.office.com/mail/compose/AAMkADNmOGNiMTkyLTMzODUtNDcyNy05NjZ…>
EP 2 Family Matters - Sunday 3rd May 8.15pm<https://outlook.office.com/mail/compose/AAMkADNmOGNiMTkyLTMzODUtNDcyNy05NjZ…>
EP 3 Protecting Primates – Sunday 10th May 8.15pm<https://outlook.office.com/mail/compose/AAMkADNmOGNiMTkyLTMzODUtNDcyNy05NjZ…>.
3) Petition to End the Global Trade in Wildlife
Please consider signing this petition to call on our world’s governments to permanently end the commercial trade and sale in markets of wild terrestrial animals for consumption worldwide
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/endthetrade
Thanks!
4) Survey on Pet Bereavement (especially men wanted!)
Please consider helping a Masters student (about 15 mins)

https://stirlingpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6Kloix32uH5Czpb
5) Survey on Interaction with & Attachment to Animals in the Covid-19 pandemic (INTACT).
https://york.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3EocKkXGgmzoxE1 (about 10-15 mins)
The aim of the study is to investigate the role of interactions and relationships with animals in the context of Covid-19 social distancing measures, with a focus on human health, wellbeing and social connectedness. We will also explore how the current context may affect animal ownership and aspects of animal welfare/wellbeing and behaviour.
The survey will be open to adults who live in the UK, irrespective of whether they currently own pets, and will be easily accessible via a link to an online questionnaire, which will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Ethics approval for this project has been granted by the University of York ethics committee.
6) BERG Wednesday 22nd - earlier time of 5pm
22nd April (Earth Day), BERG will be at the earlier time of 5.00-5.45pm (please join from 4.55pm). The topic is the impact of the pandemic and lockdown on companion animals.
Suggested preparation - https://www.companionanimals.nz/covidupdates/
The reasons for the earlier time is because there an Online Panel Discussion: Ape Conservation and Zoonotic Diseases - April 22nd @ 6pm BST - Full details and how to register sent previously.

[View More]Cottrell Building - deadline Thursday 23rd at 10am.

Here is the link to join BERG on Wed 22nd starting at 5pm.

Dear BERGers
Microsoft Teams
Teams – please do NOT Accept or Decline BERG, or be Tentative!. Happy to wait to see who shows up! (Important - if you are “external” you are very welcome but do let me know so I can invite you separately).
BERG - Privacy awareness issues with video conferencing
There’s probably a UoS document out there somewhere that says all this…..but here is my version delivered direct to your inbox.
The “Teams” video conferencing is the method that the University of …
[View More]Stirling, and many other organisations, use. I am assured it is end-to-end encrypted, and safe. (Unlike Zoom potentially– see "Zoom as Malware<https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/apr/02/zoom-technology-security…>" and recent University correspondence).
However, Teams still has some potentially very serious issue on privacy. I feel it is important we are aware of this new method of communication, and the potential consequences of its use. I leave it up to you to decide whether you want to be a virtual BERGer or await days when we are free again to enjoy the Psychology common room together again.
Here’s the ink for new subscribers (or to unsubscribe): http://lists.stir.ac.uk/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/berg
Privacy! We must be aware of what we are doing.
Video recording: I would never record a BERG meeting without informing you all in advance.
Photos: Anyone who can see your computer screen can take a photo/screen shot at any time. We must be aware of this. We have options, and each individual can choose their own response:
* If you do not want your face to be seen, use audio only (with no photo, or a photo of your choosing – you upload in your Microsoft Teams profile).
* If you allow Teams to access the video on your computer/phone, you have to trust us not to take photos without express permission (generally on the count of 1,2,3 say cheese/thumbs up etc!). Apart from being caught in an awful facial expression, I don’t think there is anything else we are doing that would compromise us. We do not share confidential or sensitive information during BERG.
* Please also be aware that we can see where you are – i.e. usually now we see into your home. Therefore think about what we can see in the background. Do you have an original Edwin Landseer<https://www.wikiart.org/en/edwin-henry-landseer/brazilian-marmosets-1842> on your wall that someone might see and target you for a burglary? I wish.
Audio:
* Anyone who is around you can hear you on the call, and if you are not wearing a headset they can hear us too. We do not know who is around so beware who you speak about (e.g. in ways you would not be happy for the person you are talking about to hear!). Sometimes we can see other people around you and hear them. Please make those around you aware of this (or mute your microphone when you are not speaking).
* Please use a headset if you have young kids around (this is in your control and safer than telling us to watch our language or topics of conversation). Or please go somewhere private. We have options – you choose what works for your situation.
I think all these issues have solutions. I shall try to remind everyone to be aware at the beginning of each video call. Or you remind me, please!
Hope to see some of you later, and please suggest edits/additions to this message as other issues arise. I’m learning!

Virtual BERG meeting. If you have a Stirling email address, access through the portal "Microsoft Teams cloud icon", and then select "Teams". If you are non-Stirling, please just email me let me know you want to come and I'll invite you! If you are a Mac user you cannot join, sadly.
This BERG meeting will be another catch up, as things develop so rapidly and impact us all. Please also think about any question you might have that would benefit from the wisdom and input from the group.....or any …
[View More]person we might invite to speak or topics for discussion in future.
I'll pop you all a note on privacy issues too (in email). Hope to see some of you tomorrow, Hannah

Dear BERGers
First, my sincere thanks to Sarah Kraemer who ran the real BERG meetings brilliantly this semester, with Gema's help. I am sorry I missed them, but I was overseas. I am home in Stirling now. I hope you are all home and safe too.
We shall now have virtual BERG meetings – starting today! Everybody welcome!
This note explains how to join our meeting which starts at 5.30pm today, Wednesday 1st April. I think it will last less than one hour.
I hope it will be every Wednesday until …
[View More]we can meet together again. I ask for experienced Zoom users to volunteer to host so I can learn how to do it better. I am quite confident I can do it today though!!
The attached document is our topic for discussion (reading time 5 min - 3 hours!). Please do read to the end of this message before you join virtual BERG.
I know these instructions work!
Before the meeting please set up "Zoom" on the biggest computer screen you have so you can see us (if you want to see us).
It should take less than 15 minutes to get it set up if you have not already.
It will help if you have a camera on your computer, but this is not necessary. You can even do this on your smart phone!
Please do this here - https://zoom.us/ Sign up is free.

Video Conferencing, Web Conferencing, Webinars, Screen Sharing - Zoom<https://zoom.us/>
Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop, and room systems. Founded in 2011 ...
zoom.us<http://zoom.us/>
If you don’t want to be seen you can just come by audio and look at those of us who are willing to show our faces!
Today, 1st April the BERG link is
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/931197509?pwd=eG51ZnpFdkMvYUxycVhnZzNMbUNOUT09<https://www.google.com/url?q=https://us04web.zoom.us/j/931197509?pwd%3DeG51…>
Meeting ID: 931 197 509
Password: 001218
Please start joining after 5.25pm.....
Top tips!
1. If you can, please wear something animal themed.
2. Please use the chat button (an icon near the bottom of your screen in a row of functions that will appear if you hover the mouse over the video image). This is good, if for example we cannot hear you.
3. If we have many folk, please also use the “hands up” icon as this allows us to coordinate our chats and not all speak at once!
4. Positive feedback - the “thumbs up” icon might also be appreciated when you like what someone is saying!
Troubleshooting
Email me or call me in advance of the meeting – but not during the call – see point 2 above. I cannot promise to be able to answer the call, never mind the question, but I will try if time permits.
Finally – and importantly – the Topic for Discussion.
The pandemic is setting us all challenges. I recognise we all need emotional and psychological support, but I request we do not use the BERG meetings to discuss the Covid-19 pandemic, unless it relates specifically to research.
If anyone needs emotional support, I direct you to University services (see the portal).
I would also be happy to arrange for a trained counsellor to join an online Zoom meeting. I have two friends in mind. Please just email me. I shall treat all such emails in confidence. Please put “in confidence” as your subject header to help me.
Today’s discussion is on the attached document, which I hope is self-explanatory!
I like working from home – I’m finding it quite creative! We can’t knock on each other’s office doors now, but we can and we must stay connected. I am excited to see Betsy Herrelko in Washington DC later, and Pawel, and anyone else who can make it.
As I said before bring your own drinks and nibbles!

Dear BERGers,
We are all used to these announcements by now, but it doesn't hurt any less!
Given the situation with COVID-19 and the University’s announcement on Friday of last week to end all face-to-face teaching, we have decided to cancel the BERG meetings for the next couple of weeks. The speakers were informed of this yesterday, and we learned that one of the speakers planned for this week has actually seen their ERASMUS exchange program cut short, and has already flown home to wait out …
[View More]the storm.
In the meantime, we hope that everyone is following the advice and guidance of the experts! As for the future of BERG-- we will be in touch again if things change, and the dust settles.
Stay safe and maintain sanity,
Sarah and Gema

Dear BERGers,
Another Week, another Weminder e-mail! This week is extra special, because on Mar 08, 2020, Scotland celebrated "International Women's Day"! Shout-out to all of the fierce female minds that plan, present for, and attend BERG, contributing so much of themselves to make our research group worthwhile. 🤜🤛
Following that point, this week we have decided to cancel the BERG meeting due to the UCU strikes taking place Monday through Friday, and causing some understandably lower-than-…
[View More]usual attendance. Instead, on March 18, we will have THREE presenters giving brief presentations discussing their research efforts. It is simply an added bonus that they all happen to be women! 👊
On 18 March 2020, at 5:30pm, please come on down to Cottrell 3A94 to hear the following short talks and learn more about these topics:
Juliet Robertsone - “Restricted access to working memory does not prevent cumulative improvement in a cultural evolution task”
Kateřina Fiurašková - "MHC, hormonal contraception and women's reproductive success"
Lucie Kuncová - "Imprinting-like effect and similarity in body odour"
See you next week, Ruth BERGer GinsBERG's!
