Hello everyone,
I hope you have had a great summertime. Next week (Wednesday 25th, 4 pm, Psychology Common Room) we will host the first BERG-SHAIR meeting of the academic year 2024-2025! This one is a social gathering, with no scheduled presentation. We thought that it would be nice if everybody assisting could bring some snacks or drinks to share —that way we do not need to ask the Division for extra money given all the budget restrictions we are suffering. I hope this is ok for everybody 🙂.
Then, from the 2nd of October onward we will proceed with usual meetings where a speaker/s will present their work with time for discussion afterward. I will email you every Wednesday morning announcing both the speaker or activity for the next week as well as a reminder of the speaker or activity of that particular day.
See you all next Wednesday!
Best,
Alex

Dear BERGers and SHAIRers
It is my great pleasure to inform you that our Head of BERG, Pawel Fedurek has become a member in the Royal Society of Edinburgh Young Academy of Scotland.
This is a true accomplishment - applications were rigorously scored and the competition was intense.
I hope you will join me in congratulating Pawel on this great achievement.
We should raise a glass to him at our first BERG/SHAIR meeting next month.
Best, Hannah

Hi Pawel, I hope you're doing well? I was wondering whether you might be able to help us circulate via the BERG email list the attached advert for a fully-funded PhD with me, Carl Soulsbury and Simon Clegg on the welfare impacts of urbanisation of wild foxes and hedgehogs? Dear all,
Hope everyone is having a lovely summer and it is OK to use this mailing list.
This year I will be hosting the Animal-Computer Interaction conference in Glasgow in December, which looks at how animals interact with technology and the design of interactive tools for animals.
There is more details below, and I’ll put up the registration details soon, but I wanted to share with you encase you were interested in attending, or submitting a short paper to be published as part of this conference. The deadline is the 2nd August and is only typically a few pages long.
There will be international experts attending who are interested in developing technologies for animals and their effects so will be a good opportunity to connect to that audience if someone wishes to.
Warmth,
Ilyena

===================================================
Dear colleagues,
The Eleventh International Animal-Computer Interaction Conference (ACI'24) will be held on 2nd-5th December 2024 in Glasgow University, UK.
The deadline for emerging work papers is the 2nd August. We invite a wide range of contributions that have the potential to promote a constructive dialogue around how animals interact with technology and the design of interactive tools for animals. We welcome submissions from multidisciplinary areas, including computer science, veterinary science, design, and ecology. Our aim is to foster the development of Animal Computer Interaction (ACI) as a discipline. We encourage submission from those who work in the space between animals and technology.
Submissions will be peer-reviewed. Accepted submissions will be included in the ACI2024 Conference Proceedings.
Submissions might address topics such as: the role of technology in shaping human-animal relationships; studies and/or analysis of large-scale technology for animal deployments; considerations on the wider context of technology for animal use; methods and reflections on studying the next generation of technology for animals; or how to conduct ACI research in a world where commercial design and deployment of technology for animals outpaces academic thought. High-quality submissions on any related topic related to ACI are welcome.
We invite research paper submissions, emerging works and workshops. You can find details on our website: https://www.aciconf.org<https://www.aciconf.org/><https://www.aciconf.org%3chttps/www.aciconf.org/%3e>.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas

Volunteer Field Assistant Needed
We are seeking a volunteer for short-term field assistance for a PhD project evaluating the use of artificial canopy bridges by mantled howler monkeys. The project is located in the southern Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, and this element of work will involve botanical surveys around the bridge sites, most likely for a few weeks in September/October 2024. We are hoping to find someone already living in or traveling through Costa Rica who would like to build field experience, or another research student working in the area whom we could assist with elements of their project in return. For more information, please contact Dr Tracie McKinney on tracie.mckinney(a)southwales.ac.uk<mailto:tracie.mckinney@southwales.ac.uk>.
Best wishes,
Pawel
