Dear BERGers,
This is a reminder that this Wednesday (4pm) we have a seminar with Dr Léo Perrier (University of Neuchatel) giving a talk entitled "Studying animal signal evolution: a data-driven approach to vocal communication". Please see the abstract below. The meeting will be held online (link below).
Abstract:
In recent years, the study of animal vocal signals has become increasingly common. And for good reasons: vocal communication plays a crucial role in social life, by regulating interactions, alarming from predators or carrying group and individual identity. However, analyses of vocalizations are not straightforward: they can be conducted at different, often complementary levels, and integrating them into a biological perspective can be challenging, especially due to the apparition of emerging, data-driven methods. From treating acoustic signals as simple behavioral traits to employing complex call classifications and generative AI, these methods can provide valuable insights into the evolution of animal communication. However, they only gain their full meaning when interpreted within an ecological and evolutionary framework.

Dear BERGers,
A quick reminder that today at 4pm we have our first research seminar with Dr Alex Barrable (Quin Margaret University) giving a talk entitled "Nature connectedness: Latest research and walking ecosystems". Please see the abstract below. The meeting will take place in the Psychology Common Room (Cottrell Building, 3A94) and online.
Link to the meeting and a list of the forthcoming seminars are below.
Abstract:
Drawing upon the ideas of biophilia, our innate affinity with the natural world and nature connectedness, the construct that describes a positive relationship with nature, this talk will focus on some prior research around this, including disconnectedness, nature connection and psychological distress in the face of ecological catastrophe, and how reimagining ourselves not as isolated beings but as holobionts, walking ecosystems teeming with microbial life, can radically shift our relationship with the rest of the natural world.

Dear All,
I hope you are all well and had a nice summer. We are about to resume our BERG seminars, which run each Wednesday at 4pm, at the start of the semester. Below is the seminar timetable - we hope you can attend some of these seminars!
Our first meeting on September 17th will be held in person in the Psychology Common Room (3A94). We don't have a specific agenda for this one - it's just for catching up with each other, and for new members (e.g., our new MSc students) to be introduced. Please come by if you are around!
