Dear all,
On Wednesday this week at 4pm, Prof. Bennett Schwartz (Florida International University, USA) will be talking about metacognition. Please, see below the title and short abstract for his talk.
As I mentioned before, this meeting will be online (below is the teams link). However, I have booked the Psychology common room for all our meetings, so I will be there with my computer setting up the talk. You’re welcome to join me there.
Title: Comparative approaches and the natural ecology of metacognition
Abstract: Most cognitive scientists assume that our core cognitive abilities evolved through natural selection. However, we lack the ability to assess causality concerning the natural selection processes that shaped human cognition. As such, I advocate a comparative approach to understand the potential natural selection of cognition. In this talk, I consider metacognition, the experience and knowledge of one’s own cognitive system. I compare the methods used in humans and non-human primates with respect to both the cognitive mechanisms underlying metacognition and the accuracy of metacognition at predicting performance on an object-level task. I advocate for an approach to metacognition that makes hypotheses based on natural ecology and then applies those hypotheses to a wide range of species.
Best,
Gema

Hello Pawel,
I was wondering if you could forward the following information to BERG members, it could be possible interest to someone.
Editor in Chief positions (x2)
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you are doing well! As the newly elected President of the Linnean Society of London, I am writing to alert you to two ongoing searches for the Editor in Chief role for two of the Linnean Society journals – specifically the Botanical Journal and the Zoological Journal, and to ask for your assistance in spreading the word among your communities and networks.
The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on systematic and evolutionary zoology and comparative studies of both living and fossil animals, while the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on systematic and evolutionary botany and comparative studies of both living and fossil plants. Both of these Editor-in-Chief positions will receive an honorarium of £15,000 per year (plus up to £1,000 in travel expenses for the purpose of attending conferences to publicise the journal) and will be appointed for a fixed three-year period, with a start date of 1 April 2023. It will also be expected that the successful applicant will make themselves available to shadow the existing Editors-in-Chief from October/November 2022 to the end of March 2023 to enable a smooth transition.
The Editors-in-Chief will be supported by a Journal Editorial Manager who will manage all the journal’s online systems, processes and relationships to ensure that the journal is published in a timely manner and adheres to the highest editorial standards. They are further supported by a Journal Officer who is responsible for supporting the Journal Editorial Manager in the delivery and production of the required administrative support to the Editors-in-Chief of the Linnean Society Journals. The decision to create this in-house administrative team to support the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board was made by the Linnean Society’s Council earlier this year, in order to reduce the administrative workload on the Editor-in-Chief and allow them to spend more time on setting out a future direction for the journal and (with the assistance of the Linnean Society and our publishers OUP) raising the profile of the journal amongst authors and sourcing interesting papers.
For the Editors-in-Chief roles, we are especially interested in finding a creative individual who will work with us to facilitate the future development of the journals, and who possesses the appropriate networks and communication skills to ensure that the journal thrives at the international level. UK residency is not required for these roles, and we welcome applications from early career scientists with relevant editorial experience. Mindful of EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion) principles, the new Editors-in-Chief will continue to ensure a diversity of authors and editorial board members and will be committed to widening access to research to a broader community of all those interested in protecting nature.
Further details of both Editor-in-Chief roles are available here: https://www.linnean.org/the-society/vacancies-and-volunteering<https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linne…>. Please note the deadline for the Editor-in-Chief of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society role is next Thursday, September 8 (12pm BST). The deadline for the Editor-in-Chief of the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society role is Friday, September 16 (12pm BST).
Thank you for your help in disseminating these exciting opportunities, and I look forward to seeing many of you at conferences this autumn and winter!
Best wishes,
Anjali
