Title: Beliefs about the Stock Market: Framing Effects in Subjective Expectations Abstract Financial models argue that investment decisions partially depend on expectations about stock market returns. However, reported expectations – like any other survey responses – may depend on the wording of the questions eliciting those expectations. In the current research, we explore a relatively novel “probability” framing effect. Across 3 studies, respondents appear to hold significantly different beliefs about future stock market performance depending on whether they report the probability the stock market will go up or down, with a difference in beliefs of up to 15 percentage points. The direction of the difference is the opposite of most framing effects that display descriptions of attributes, with participants who are asked about stock market declines appearing more optimistic. We find this “probability” framing effect moderates with subjective numeracy and financial literacy; however, not with survey experience, as differences in beliefs persist over repeated survey administration for many months. We rule out several potential explanations for this effect, and discuss implications of a “probability” framing effect for future researchers and survey designers to consider. Our main findings are that end users’ risk perception of the danger scale increases linearly rather than exponentially (as intended by the avalanche services), confirming recent findings by Morgan, Haegeli, Finn, and Mair (2023) who used a different scale and a North American user group. Second, we find significant differences in the perceived probability of avalanches relative to a given avalanche danger level depending on whether respondents are asked by a frequency or a percentage chance response format. More specifically, we find that a frequency format elicits lower estimates and, in some cases, a higher variance. Third, we find that individual characteristics of end users (such as outdoor sport experience, age, gender, avalanche education, and having experienced an avalanche) has little explanatory power to predict their interpretation of the avalanche danger scale. Finally, using a small scale sample (N = 19) of professional avalanche forecasters in Scotland, we find that there is little expected and actual overlap between end users and professional forecasters in their numerical interpretation of the danger scale. We summarise our findings by identifying important lessons for strategies to improve avalanche risk understanding and its communication. Delayed synergies are harder to see: an experimental investigation of factors influencing synergistic judgements of health risks When certain health hazards are combined, they produce synergies. In other words, they lead to risks that are greater than the sum of risks presented by each factor separately. For instance, smoking and radon exposure interact synergistically to increase lung cancer risk. Without doubt, how people judge such risk combinations is important – and previous research showed mostly underestimation of synergistic risks. Our previous research instead suggests that people are better at judging certain synergistic risks as such than others. In the current pre-registered study, we aim to understand why this is the case. In particular, we experimentally test whether the likelihood of judging a combination of risk factors as synergistic depends on the outcome being immediate or delayed, binary or continuous, or whether knowledge about the outcome plays a role. We find that synergistic judgements are much more likely for immediate outcomes compared to the delayed ones. Thanks to the structure of our data, we are also able to shed light on the possible mechanism for this. In particular, our data suggest that this result is due to the difference in how much weight people give to the single risk factors for immediate vs delayed outcomes, not to how they evaluate the combination of risk factors. Our study furthermore tests for the effects of format of the task. We find that synergistic judgements are more likely if natural frequencies and partitive probabilities are used, as opposed to non-partitive (single-case) probabilities. These results have important implications for communications concerning synergistic health risks. Generally our students come with an interest in topics but are less fixed regarding the specific theories they apply to that topic. So if you have a theory / method you wish to gather data on then there may be an opportunity to develop a fruitful collaboration through an MSc dissertation. Our MSc students will be presenting their ideas around dissertation topics tomorrow at 1pm in rm 2a75. We will have 12 students presenting, each for 5 mins + 2mins feedback from the floor. If you can pop in for any presentations between 1-3pm then I am sure students will greatly appreciate it. Dear PhD lab, Apologies – I meant to write this e-mail last week already, but I ran out of hours in a day. :-) This is a quick update for everyone who wasn’t at last week’s lab. During the last lab session, we decided that 1. We will give the hidden curriculum sessions more structure. * Rather than you preparing questions about certain topics and us supervisors answering them in a fireside chat-type format, we will convert these sessions into a book club * We can alternate book club sessions with sessions in which a student presents their progress * We will use Hector’s suggested reading (Marc Bellemare (2022) Doing Economics: What You Should Have Learned in Grad School ― But Didn’t) for this * Please reach out to Hector, if you’d like a pdf version of the book * There are 5 Chapters (not counting the Introduction) * Ch 2: Writing Papers * Ch 3: Giving Talks * Ch 4: Navigating Peer Review * Ch 5: Finding Funding * Ch 6: Doing Service * So there are 5 book club sessions we can run throughout the term * Proposed structure: * Everyone reads the respective chapter ahead of the book club * One PhD student gives a 15-20 minute presentation about the chapter as a discussion starter * We then discuss the boom chapter together and supervisors can offer their own views and experiences on the respective topic that way * The first book club session will take place next week, 15th of February * To prepare, please read: Chapter 2 – Writing Papers * Katie kindly volunteered to give the first presentation on this * Kevin will give the presentation on Chapter 3 – Giving Talks, either end of February or after the Reading Week (mid March) 2. We are currently working with CMR on setting up the competition and have a provisional launch date of 12th February. IAS studentship competition 2024 – Your opinions are needed

Dear Behavioural Science Cluster, I hope I am catching most of you before heading out the door for a well-deserved break! As you probably know, IAS has announced a new competition round for PhD scholarships for the coming year. Gözde and I (as PIs of this year’s bid) have had a post-mortem meeting with Iain to receive feedback on why our cluster was unsuccessful. One of the key points that held us back was that our cluster theme was perceived as too broad. We always knew that a catch-all strategy (cluster theme = Behavioural Science), which set us apart from the other, much narrower, cluster themes, could go either way. Now we know, which way it went: the wrong one. Anyway, what was very clear to us after meeting with Iain is that (if we want to have another go in 2024), we need to significantly narrow the cluster theme. We asked Iain if this was possible under the IAS rules that only previously pre-approved clusters were able to compete next year and he said that it would be. So, after some pondering, Gözde and I have decided that we’d be willing to throw our hats in the ring once more - provided we have the support from the cluster. Together with Iain, we had a look at the competing cluster themes (many of which are behavioural science in nature already) and the clearest opening (as in: least crowded field of competing bids) was in Environmental Behaviour. Given the abundance of expertise in our cluster in Behavioural Health, we are also considering a cluster theme that combines, Behaviour, Health, and Environment. This would also be a great match for the University’s new R&I strategy (Spaces, Places & Lives), as we will have to reframe our initial proposal to this R&I strategy anyway (see details here<https://stir.sharepoint.com/sites/InstituteforAdvancedStudies/Shared%20Docu…>). So here are our questions to you: (1) Are there any objections to entering the 2024 competition with a theme narrowed to Environmental Behaviour (and possibly added Behavioural Health)? * Importantly: The narrowing of our cluster theme would only affect our PhD studentship bid. The theme of our Behavioural Science cluster as a research group would remain a broad tent! * Also: If you have an alternative idea for rebranding our IAS bid (and/or would be interested in Co-PIing it), we’d be very keen to hear it (2) Who would want to join such a revised IAS bid? * Just as last time, we are looking for a healthy mix of senior colleagues and ECRs (3) Optional (but highly welcome): If you raised your hand under (2), could you give us a concrete example of a potential research topic or two? * The less general our proposal, the better our chances We would be very happy to hear from you regarding these three points. Hi all, I am delighted to announce that Leonhard Lades is officially joining Stirling economics division as Professor of Behavioural and Environmental Economics. Leo will join the faculty in the Spring semester. Many of you will know Leo as a former colleague here at Stirling and as someone who has reliably and regularly contributed to behavioural science at Steven after he had left. Here is the justification that the board is seeking - let me know if there is anything I can help with: Sam Shand is partnering with Prof David Comerford around the delivery of the MSc Behavioural Science. Sam is representing Cowry Consulting, one of the UK's foremost behavioural science consulting agencies. Cowry works predominantly with organisations in the financial services (e.g. Tesco Bank), retail (Ocado), public (Reducing Reoffending Partnership) and third (Dog’s Trust) sectors. Cowry have developed a program to partner with academic institutions that offer programs in behavioural economics and behavioural science. So far they have partnered The University of Manchester, City University of London, Keele University, and Kingston University London. The goal of the partnership is that our MSc students gain insights from someone working at the coalface of applied behavioural science; who knows about what clients demand and the challenges of applying behavioural science in organisations; and who has a sense of the market demand for behavioural science and up-coming areas in the industry. An added benefit is that the partnership means that two of our MSc students will automatically be offered places on Cowry’s competitive Summer School. In addition, we will have the opportunity to nominate one of our students to receive a two-week period of work experience with Cowry. The benefit for Cowry from this is that they will have a direct pipeline of well-trained behavioural scientists whom they can directly recruit to their graduate scheme. One key intention of the partnership with Stirling is to broaden this pipeline outside of London. Sam Shand and Course Director David Comerford have worked out a model where Sam will deliver 4 guest lectures on applied behavioural science over the course of the academic year. Sam will also help to refine an existing assignment on the program - an experimental design project. Students will work with Sam and Prof Comerford to tailor the experiment we design so that it yields data that informs a live Cowry project. In addition to the above, Sam will deliver a careers talk to students across the university on opportunities in Behavioural Science. Moreover, Sam is exceptionally well placed to deliver on the above because Sam is a graduate of our MSc Behavioural Science at Stirling. At Stirling, Sam was jointly awarded our Research Based Learning Prize' - awarded for the best behavioural science dissertation and earned a distinction in his MSc. Prior to coming to Stirling, Sam spent the first 4 and half years of his career working in Organisational Change consultancy, primarily at the Pricewaterhouse Coopers consulting firm. I had a meeting with our head of school and he likes this idea. I see no reason not to go with option 3 - Scale. I'll be in touch to work out with you a set of lectures that suits us all and to brainstorm about the group project. You might remember the experiment on antibiotic disposal that we did as a class in the Evidence-Based Decision Making module. I think it would be great if you provided us with a real-world problem and our students could work with me (and maybe you) to design a survey experiment that speaks to that problem. Kevin has to run your title past the higher ups but says there are precedents and as long as Cowry is not shown to be e.g. colluding with the Russian mafia it should go through no problem. Given that you would be involved in teaching / assessment the title would be "honorary lecturer". Has a formidable ring to it! Let me know next steps - we have induction for our incoming students on Monday. It seems like a good motivator to flag at the induction that the summer school places and work experience will be offered this summer.
