<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">He is right saying that before the attacks happened, the government had reason to fear that both Al Qaida and ETA might be planning something prior to the elections. Yes, two ETA members were caught red-handed with explosives on Chamartín station (the second biggest one in </SPAN><st1:State><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Madrid</SPAN></st1:place></st1:State><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">) at Christmas time. </SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">However, there is another much more interesting data: <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>Just ten days before the terrorist attack (11-M), two ETA members were found with two lorries in </SPAN><st1:City><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Cuenca</SPAN></st1:place></st1:City><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">’s county (a county next to </SPAN><st1:State><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Madrid</SPAN></st1:place></st1:State><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">). Both terrorist were in their way to </SPAN><st1:State><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Madrid</SPAN></st1:place></st1:State><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> with maps from “El Corredor de Henares” (the train line were the bombs exploded). <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>ETA has also threatened attacks in </SPAN><st1:country-region><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Spain</SPAN></st1:place></st1:country-region><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> in the run up to the elections.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">It is true that the police concluded that the explosives and detonators were not of the types USUALLY involved in ETA attacks, but they are used by ETA. There are two types of explosives that ETA employs: the ones stolen in </SPAN><st1:country-region><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">France</SPAN></st1:place></st1:country-region><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> –more often- different to these ones; and the explosives stolen in </SPAN><st1:country-region><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Spain</SPAN></st1:place></st1:country-region><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> –rarely- which are the ones who have been used. However, Al Qaida has NEVER used them.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">So it makes sense that the government decided to emphasise the ETA line at the beginning (Thursday morning and afternoon, when the chaos surrounded the situation).</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">When a tape with verses from the Koran was found in a lorry with some more detonators (by the way, in a very obvious place) on Thursday evening (11-M still) Angel Acebes (Interior Minister) opened the door to an Islamic group attack. The Islamic option existed since the first day and it was repeated every day.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">It is also true that the attacks carried political costs. However, the costs or benefits are not only for the Government but for the main party in the opposition (the Socialist Party).</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Saturday was the reflection day. Spanish electoral and democratic law doesn’t allow anybody to ask for votes this day. Prisa group <SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;</SPAN>(Main Private Media group in </SPAN><st1:country-region><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Spain</SPAN></st1:place></st1:country-region><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> which President Jesús Polanco is one of the main socialist figures), which follows socialist interests, strongly emphasised Al Qaeda option. They knew that if Al Qaeda had organized the killings, people could punish the Popular Party in Sunday's general elections.&nbsp; As you know, the Popular Party government&nbsp;supported&nbsp; </SPAN><st1:country-region><st1:place><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Iraq</SPAN></st1:place></st1:country-region><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB"> war against the will of the Spanish public opinion.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Prisa channels (Canal +, cadena SER, el País, CNN +…), asked for a sensible vote depending on who was behind 11-M attacks (Does it make any difference???). At the same time, cadena SER and CNN+, distributed SMS and e-mails asking for a demonstration in front of&nbsp; Partido Popular headquarters. The demonstrations&nbsp;were&nbsp;not spontaneous at all, they were really well orchestrated. I have to add that it is much more repugnant when you see that victims are used like a way to get electoral goals.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Saturday evening, Ángel Acebes (Interior Minister) was offering all the checked information they had. One hour later, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba (socialist spokesman)</SPAN><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">&nbsp;accused Government of misleading information without any proof.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">All that kind of activities have a repercussion far-reaching in an emotional population who has been so hurt just two days ago. In that kind of circumstances, people do not follow their reason but their feelings (Is it a democratic way of employing mass media?)</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">I have not found any single lie from the old Government during these days, either any appellation to vote during the reflection day or the electoral journey. I&nbsp;do not know what they have not said,&nbsp;but&nbsp;I have seen an effort for punctual and&nbsp;transparent information, and a clean&nbsp;attitude in their way to the&nbsp;key day.</SPAN></H5>
<H5 class=RTE><SPAN lang=EN-GB style="COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-ansi-language: EN-GB">Once we&nbsp;know the electoral results, it is possible to see where is the interesting example of both the tactics and dangers of news management. This is the new Spanish Government “fresh” start. </SPAN></H5>
