Dear List-members,

It may be of interest that the people responsible for so-called 'D-Notices' in the UK were supposed to meet last year, in November. (These are the people who 'advise' editors and broadcasters whether or not such-and-such a story might be detrimental to the 'national interest', specifically in matters relating to 'defence of the realm.')

That meeting was deferred, for reasons not stated on the official DPBAC website (www.dnotice.org.uk) It is a truly splendid site, please do visit it.

With UK troops still dying in the 'war' against Iraq even now, let alone two months ago, it seems curious that these chaps didn't have anything pressing to talk about. But perhaps, in their capacity as public servants, ever-anxious not to overreach their remit (as such mandarins are oft wont to be) they felt that they would've been obliged to address matters which they and/or their Whitehall chums really would've preferred not to, such as - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - - -

( you may wish to fill in the preceding blanks yourself with any combination of the words Kelly, Hutton, Andrew, Lord, David, Dr, Gilligan, Hoon, Campbell, Teare, Alleged, Suicide etc etc)

The DPBAC (Defence, Press and Broadcasting Advisory Committee) will next meet on Tues Jan 13th.

That's next Tuesday.

The current Chair of the DPBAC is, wait for it now, wait for it...Sir Kevin Tebbit !! (*1)

Busy week ahead Sir Kevin ! Happy New Year !

Yes, it's the same Tebbit who currently serves as permanent under-secretary for Defence, the same guy who testified to Hutton that the decision to release David Kelly's (*2) name was made in 10 Downing St at a meeting chaired by T Blair (*3)

Weird or what ? But, hey - that's democracy for ya !! Cheers y'all !

Ian Brotherhood

NOTES :

(*1) Sir Kevin Tebbit (KCB CMG.)

(*2) Dr David Kelly (RIP)

(*3) Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Tony Blair (----)
