We have two seminars running next week:
1.
'An Introduction to English for Academic Purposes'
Anne Lawrie, Centre for English Language Teaching (CELT), Institute of
Education
1st November 2005 2pm - 4pm
Cottrell 2A9,
This session will be run as a workshop and will raise students'
awareness of the conventions of academic writing through small group
discussions. The areas of academic writing which will be highlighted
will include the importance of inter and intra paragraph linking;
cohesion of texts through the use of cohesive devices; summarising;
synthesising information from different source material; critical
analysis and thinking.
A secondary topic for this session will be the potential problems and
misunderstandings between a supervisor and his/her supervisee due to a
lack of cultural understanding between them. Expectations from each may
differ due to this. Through small and whole group discussion, possible
solutions may be found.
2.
Qualitative Research'
Gill Hubbard, Nursing & Midwifery
3rd November 2005, 2pm - 4pm

focus groups etc), and including an overview of qualitative theories
i.e. ethnography, phenomenology.
To book for either of these sessions, email me or the gradlist.
