The principal need is to ensure that<br>students undertaking degrees in psychology are provided with a contemporary<br>coverage of evidence based learning in the biological basis of behaviour.<br> The Department currently offers two courses in the area, one at the second<br>year level (PSYC2007) and the other at third year (PSYC3016) - the<br>successful candidate will be required to take full responsibility for<br> PSYC2007 and to coordinate PSYC3016, with the major teaching commitment<br>coming from other areas in the University. The conduct of a strong and<br>internationally recognised research program is an essential feature of the<br> position. Teaching in the area is mandated by the external<br>accreditation criteria to which this curriculum must comply. The Research<br> School of Psychology wishes to strengthen its profile in the area of<br>biological psychology and to capitalise on the established research<br>strengths of the existing group in the area. Biological psychology also<br>provides a strong vehicle for the School to extend its collaboration with<br> other areas in the College, including the Research School of Biology, the<br>John Curtin School of Medical Research, and the ANU Medical School. The<br>area, and this position, therefore clearly fit the School's strategic plans.<br> <br><br>Role Statement:<br>Specific duties required of a Level B Academic may include to:<br>. Develop, convene and deliver a high quality course on the biological basis<br>of behaviour to second year undergraduate psychology students (PSYC2007) and<br> coordinate an advanced third year course on Issues in Behavioural<br>Neuroscience (PSYC3016);<br>. Supervise the independent research of students enrolled in the honours<br>(fourth) year and contribute to postgraduate research supervision in<br> psychology;<br>. Maintain the development of innovative and contemporary course material at<br>the undergraduate level;<br>. Undertake original and creative research of high quality in psychology;<br>. Maintain a significant profile of published work in refereed journals of<br> high international standing, and report the results of research at<br>appropriate national and international conferences;<br>. Attend departmental meetings and assume roles on both School and ANU<br>committees as appropriate;<br> . Take reasonable care for their own workplace health and safety and not<br>wilfully place at risk the health or safety of any other person in the<br>workplace; and<br>. Undertake other duties from time to time as directed by the Head of<br> School.<br><br>Skill Base<br>A Level B Academic shall have qualifications and/or experience recognised by<br>the institution as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.<br><br>In many cases a position at this level will require a doctoral or masters<br> qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing.<br><br>In determining experience relative to qualifications, regard is had to<br>teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary<br>education, creative achievement, professional contributions and/or to<br> technical achievement.<br><br><br>Selection criteria<br><br><br><br><br>1. A PhD degree in psychology.<br>2. Experience in teaching the biological basis of behaviour to undergraduate<br>students in psychology and an ability to develop creative course material<br> and assessments in this area.<br>3. A demonstrated ability to carry out independent and original research in<br>psychology as demonstrated by a body of published work including an ability<br>to seek external competitive research grant funding.<br> 4. An ability to contribute to the research supervision of fourth year<br>(honours) and postgraduate students in areas relevant to the biological<br>basis of behaviour.<br>5. A demonstrated willingness to be involved in academic administration.<br> 6. Excellent oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated<br>ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues in<br>an academic environment.<br>7.
