This project uses a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate the mechanisms around human emotion recognition and affect transfer in zoo-housed meerkats. This project will be of interest for those working in psychology, biology, evolutionary theory, social communication
and captive animal management fields as the ramifications from this will contribute to questions currently being asked in human-animal interaction research within each of these fields. Additionally, with increasing research into the impacts of human-animal
interactions across farm, domestic, laboratory and zoo animal disciplines, understanding the fundamental principles underlying these interactions are now vital to fully appreciate the implications they may have.

This research will help us better understand the mechanisms of human-animal interactions, with implications for our evolutionary understanding of animal minds and for the successful management of zoo animals regarding the context and quality of human-animal
interactions they encounter daily.
