Law is often designed to create a shared understanding of acceptable behaviour and keep everyone safe. As dogs are important members of the United Kingdom (UK) that can have both positive and
negative impacts for people, their behaviour and management is often controlled through legislation. As a result, law impacts the daily lives of dogs and their owners, as well as dictating how they behave in public spaces. Research to date has primarily focused
only on a few key areas of dog ownership, mostly in Scotland and Wales. This study aims to create a wider understanding of all laws that impact dogs in the UK and how they differ across all 4 nations. To answer this we are developing a mixed methods framework
to systematically assess the variation in law across jurisdictions. As law is often created in response to public or organisational pressure, dog laws can provide an insight into the changing attitudes towards dogs. Also, creating a better understanding of
what laws are in effect can enable governments and organisations to better inform the public of the expectations of how dogs should behave and be treated everywhere in the UK.
