Dear all,

This is a reminder that Dr. Jill Steel will attend tomorrow's BERG/SHAIR meeting in person. I hope to see you all there! Find the title and the content or her talk below:

Children’s Wellbeing and Reading: Exploring the Influence of Reading to Dogs.

This presentation details my PhD research into Reading to Dogs, including the context for the research, methodology, findings and implications.

Jill will stay for a little while after the meeting, and Clare is planning to do an "honest box" pizza afterward. If anyone would like to stay for the pizza after the meeting, please contact Clare before 2pm tomorrow.

Besides, next week we will have another face to face presentation. Aidan Byrne, PhD candidate from the Natural History Museum and King's College London will present his work on "Using satellites to monitor East African lakes, flamingo declines and fish kill events" see abstract below

East African lakes contain more than 25% of the world’s unfrozen freshwater and support more than 100 million people, however due to infrequent monitoring the impacts of climatic and anthropogenic change on hydrology, water quality and biodiversity are poorly understood. This project used satellite Earth observation to address the data gaps and assess changes in hydrology and water quality at lakes across East Africa, linking these changes to climate and land-use trends. The impacts of lake changes on biodiversity were then investigated focusing on lesser flamingos, as more than three quarters of the global population rely on the soda lakes of East Africa. This talk will discuss the methods and results arising through this work, including the development of a lake water quality monitoring app using satellite imagery and insights into the drivers of lesser flamingo population declines. It will also discuss the use of satellite imagery to assess the causes of fish kill events in Lake Victoria as part of a collaborative project with Cornell University and the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI).

Best,
Alex
